Audio Video Interleave File

The AVI file format is one of the most widely used multimedia containers ever devised. AVI, which stands for audio video interleaved, was first introduced to the public by Microsoft in 1992 as part of their 'video for windows' multimedia framework. Being a container format, an AVI file with the .avi filename extension can exist with both video and audio content synchronized for playback. The format can thus be used by authors to edit and encode audio video sequences or just video sequences. The Digital video AVI format exists in two forms, Type 1 and Type 2.

MPEG-4 Video File

The MP4 file format and the .mp4 filename extension refer to the MPEG-4 part 14 digital multimedia format developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group. It is used as a multimedia container to wrap encoded digital video and audio streams, including subtitles and still images if required. In recent decades, the format has been popularized as one of the main standards for streaming media over the internet and other computer networks and for the digital distribution of large multimedia files. MP4 supports a large number of compression audio codecs allowing files in this format to maintain a relatively small size without discounting playback quality.

The AVI format was derived from the RIFF or resource interchange file format which is a generic container format. Digital video that is interleaved can be stored natively as a single stream conforming to the type-1 specification of the AVI file format. This has the disadvantage however of not being compatible with the video for windows framework. In general, the number of blocks in .avi files determine the amount of overhead. Overhead associated with the audio stream is determined by which codec is used to encode the stream for example AC3 or MP3-VBR.

The MPEG-4 Part 14 is standardized as part of the MPEG-4 format in ISO/IEC 14496-14:2003. It is recognized as a container format for audio and video streams and references several filename extensions of which .mp4 is one. The MPEG-4 Part 14 is in many ways identical to Apple's QuickTime format which formed the basis of MPEG-4. However, there are slight differences in compatibility with other previously standardized MPEG features and the added support for IOD or initial object descriptors which describe elementary data streams and set profile information of the resources needed for content playback.

Why convert AVI to MP4?

older Windows captures and DVDs often use AVI. MP4 (usually H.264/AAC) plays almost everywhere—phones, TVs, browsers, and social networks—so converting avoids “unsupported format” errors when sharing.

Does AVI to MP4 lose quality?

A re-encode always involves some compression. For sharing and playback the result looks close to the original at a sensible bitrate. Keep optional quality settings high when the clip will be edited further.

Will subtitles or multiple audio tracks survive AVI to MP4?

The main video and primary audio track are converted for compatibility. Soft subtitles and secondary audio streams may not carry over; burn in captions beforehand if they must appear in the MP4.
