A .pptm extension file is a macro enabled open XML, Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation file. The presentation pages that are termed as slides comprise of text, images, videos, graphs and other components including media files that are required in a presentation. This feature is especially helpful to create presentations for the academic, marketing and business domains where a large amount of content needs to be stored. The advantage of using the .pptm extension as compared to .pptx is that macros can be executed in files with this extension whereas it is not possible to execute macros in .pptx files even if it has macros in it, apart from that both formats have similar features. Microsoft introduced the Open XML format for PowerPoint presentations in 2007 hence files with this extension cannot be opened with previous PowerPoint versions. However, if a Microsoft Compatibility Pack is installed along with the previous versions, it would be possible to open the files with .pptm extension.
The Matroska video file format, .mkv, is an open source video file container which is part of the larger open source Matroska Multimedia Container which includes .mka (audio), .mks (subtitles), and .mk3D (stereoscopic video). It was first developed in 2002 and is today favored by many video authors because of the size of produced files. In 2010 the mkv format became the basis of the popular browser independent open format called WebM with several free video players providing playback support for video files encoded in .mkv. Microsoft Windows does not have native support for .mkv video files but there are plans to include native playback support in Microsoft's upcoming operating system Windows 10.

The PPTM format combines the XML Architecture with the ZIP compression technology to reduce the file size. Images, audios and videos can be opened using the 7-Zip application if a compatible PPTM editor or reader is not installed on the system. PPTM files can be converted to other formats that include PPT, PDF, PNG, PPTX or JPG. It can also be converted to a video format like MP4 or WMV. The recent additions to the presentations include features like inserting music that plays all through the presentation, sound effects to highlight specific slides, designing the presentation to play on its own just like a movie, recording the slide show with a pointer on one hand and narration on the other, repetition and shuffling the order of the slides as per requirement.
Any video player that supports DirectShow parser filters can play .mkv files once the correct decoder filers for the video file are installed. Players such as VLC or Xine have native support for .mkv files which eliminates the need to install the DirectShow decoder filter onto the operating system. The .mkv file format is capable of supporting chapter points, subtitles, different audio streams, video, and well as metadata such as file descriptions, synopsis, cover art and more.
