GIMP Image File

A .xcf extension file is a Raster image file format that is used by the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freeware image editing software application that has features similar to Adobe Photoshop. These features include the easy selection of layers, channels, transparencies, paths and guides. It facilitates saving of the edited versions of the images and storing the current position at the time of saving, layers, channels, paths and other items used at the time of editing the image. The image data is saved in the file by compressing it with the use of a simple RLE algorithm, and all those settings can be accessed again to edit the image when the XCF file is opened in a compatible image editor.

Silicon Graphics Image File

A .sgi extension file saves images in the original Silicon Graphics Image format. These files are originated from the library of SGI images that were there on every Silicon Graphics machine. SGI files are also referred to as RGB, IRIS or Irix RGB., .sgi image files can be saved in 8-bit color, 16-bit or 32-bit color. GIMP has the compatibility to read and write .sgi extension files and also has a dialog box that pops up to help select the compression type. The preferred compression is RLE and while it reduces the file size, it is advisable to check once it is done to ensure that the file size is indeed reduced as sometimes the size is more than the actual file size.

How to convert XCF to SGI

STEP 1

Select the image file in the XCF format to convert to the SGI format, you can select a file from your computer or your Google Drive or Dropbox account.                            

STEP 2

Choose the SGI format from the drop-down list as the output format, and click the Convert button, you can convert up to 5 files at the same time and a maximum size of up to 500 MB.

STEP 3

Wait until your file is uploaded and converted into the SGI image format, you can download the converted file up to a maximum of 5 times, and can also delete the file from the Download page.
